Commercial Liability Umbrella

Determining Your Protection Requirements

Do You Need It?

Commercial Umbrella Insurance provides extra protection beyond the limits of standard policies. Should your business exceed the existing coverage limits within your primary Business Insurance policies, such as Commercial Auto, your Umbrella coverage will activate, providing the protection you need. In some cases, Commercial Umbrella coverage can also protect against risks currently excluded in your underlying policies.

Because owning a company is risky, most businesses can benefit from this additional protection. We highly recommend Commercial Liability Umbrella coverage for companies that interact with the public regularly, use commercially owned vehicles, and/or operate in a hazardous environment, including but not limited to:

  • Restaurants
  • General Contractors
  • Manufacturers
  • Transportation Companies
  • Fitness Facilities
  • Property Management Companies

What Coverage Includes

Commercial Liability Umbrella typically covers risks associated with bodily injuries, property damage, and personal injury, kicking in once the underlying policy limits are exhausted.

Bodily Injury

Commercial Liability Umbrella can act as an extension of a Commercial Liability policy, helping to cover lost wages, medical bills, and legal costs related to an injury that occurred on your property or resulted from a product or service your business offered. Having this coverage can be the difference between your business surviving an incident and closing its doors permanently.

Property Damage

Commercial Liability Umbrella covers any needed repairs or replacements related to damage caused by your business to a third party’s property. This is especially helpful if you own a home services business or require employees to regularly travel using company-owned vehicles.

Landlord Liability

If you own multiple properties, Commercial Liability Umbrella offers additional coverage on top of your primary Landlord Insurance policy, providing extra financial protection against slip-and-fall claims and other bodily injury incidents.

Personal Injury

Commercial Liability Umbrella coverage protects against injuries, including those that are not physical in nature, such as slander, libel, copyright infringement (advertising), false arrest, imprisonment or detention, and wrongful eviction.

FAQs

We generally recommend Umbrella policies for higher-risk businesses, especially ones that operate a vehicle fleet, interact with the public regularly, or handle high-value contracts. Contact an agent at Allied Insurance for more personalized guidance. We can make recommendations for you based on your unique risks and existing policies.

Unlike Commercial Liability or Commercial Auto, Commercial Umbrella Liability isn’t a standalone policy. It provides additional limits above (hence, “umbrella”) the underlying policies and may cover claims that these same policies exclude, subject to a retention.

A Commercial Liability Umbrella policy does not include:

  • Damage to your own business property
  • Workers’ compensation benefits
  • Professional mistakes
  • Wrongful termination or wage discrimination disputes
  • Cyber attacks
  • Intentional acts
  • Pollution

Our insurance agents can provide guidance on what your specific coverage excludes.

Both Umbrella and Excess Liability provide additional coverage when the primary policy limits are met and exhausted. However, they differ in scope.

Commercial Umbrella adds limits across multiple underlying policies and may cover gaps. Excess Liability is a type of follow-form coverage that only increases the coverage (dollar) limits of specific policies.

Commercial Umbrella Insurance activates only once the current policy limits have been exhausted. Carriers often require that you maintain minimum limits on these policies to even qualify for an Umbrella policy.

The amount of Umbrella coverage your business needs varies based on your total net assets, active client contracts/contractual obligations, company- or industry-specific risks, and the limits in your existing Business Insurance policies. Our insurance agents can help you determine what coverage is appropriate for your company.
