The Facts:

  • There are a total of 66, 051 homeless persons in Michigan.
  • Of this number, there are 24, 713 sheltered homeless individuals on any one night.
  • The average income of a homeless family in Michigan is around $730 a month.
  • In Michigan, adults and children in families account for 52% of the total homeless.
  • There are at least 3,000 youth and children who are alone and homeless.

These numbers are a huge wake up call, but luckily there are people and organizations that work to drastically reduce these numbers. A Detroit-based nonprofit organization, Humble Design, assists families in need who are transitioning out of homeless and domestic abuse shelters by providing furnishings and design services to their new place of residence. This is a crucial service that Humble Design provides. Essentially families that are transitioning from homeless shelters into homes struggle to afford to pay for furniture, appliances, beds etc…

Humble Design started in 2009 and has serviced over 494 families to date. The members of the organization interview the previously homeless individuals and inquire what furniture they are in need of. Almost all of the families they help have no beds or furniture. Two days after the interview, they go back to the home and decorate the house.

Along with providing this great service, Humble Design is making another contribution for the community; The 1st Annual Gigs for Digs. This benefit concert will be held at The Fillmore in Detroit and will feature live musical performances from Frankie Ballard and the Motor City Horns. Frankie Ballard is a Michigan native and has had two #1 hits on the country billboard charts, so needless to say there is a ton of excitement surrounding the event.

Last week, we visited Humble Design to make a donation with the help of the Selective Insurance Groups Matching Grant Program.  We took a tour of their facilities to get a good look at how they operate and were blown away with the quick turn-over of donated items such as: furniture, beds, small appliances, kitchenware and children’s toys.  All of this being said, Humble design needs your help! Buying a ticket to the Gigs for Digs Benefit Concert will directly benefit the organization and in turn will be used to help the transitioning homeless community.People can feel good donating to a great cause while also being able to enjoy a fun concert.  If you would like to make a donation of furniture, beds etc…contact Humble Design at (248) 243-7144 to schedule a pick up.
