You got into a car accident

You got in a car accident. Now what?

|

Accidents happen on the road even to the best of drivers. The key is to respond and react appropriately as to minimize the stress and ensure a timely resolution. Here’s what we recommend:

Be prepared. While it may be unpleasant to think about, having some things on hand can help if and when things go awry. Put your most important info in the glovebox (ID cards, vehicle registration, emergency contacts, health insurance cards, etc.). Always have a car charger or extra battery on hand so you can easily make a call to the police or family.

Keep your cool. Regardless of who’s at fault, you are best served to stay calm, cool and collected. Move your car to a safe nearby location, but be careful not to leave the scene. Check to see if anyone is injured and call 911 if necessary. Contact the police in all situations. They’ll let you know if an officer needs to arrive on the scene. If your car isn’t drivable, you can request roadside assistance.

Document, document, document! Exchange names, phone numbers, addresses and email addresses of all occupants and witnesses. Take photos of the accident scene and all vehicles involved. Exchange relevant insurance information, like company name, policy number and phone number to file a claim.

We hope you never have to experience a car accident, but just know that even the most experienced of drivers have bad days. Stay safe out there!
