I’m Renting a Car, Am I Covered?

Car driving down road in the fall

This is one of the questions that we are asked a lot, “Am I covered when renting a car?”

We have partnered with Hanover Insurance to give you some food for thought, because the answer, as it usually is in insurance, is “it depends.”

The majority of the time when you rent a vehicle, you will be offered coverage from the representative assisting you.

You don’t have to take the coverage they’re offering you if your current auto policy provides you with rental coverage.

You will need to discuss this with your insurance provider to see what coverages you have regarding car rentals as coverages will vary across policies.

If you’re provided insurance through Hanover, Hanover’s Platinum Auto Elite coverage will pay for the following:

  • “Loss-of-use” or “The rental value of the duration the car is out of service for which you are liable.”
  • “Diminished value,” which is “The difference in the car’s resale value after it has been repaired.”
  • “Reasonable fees” or “The expenses the rental company incurs processing the claim for which you are liable.”

If you’re wondering whether your current auto policy provides you with rental coverage, reach out to us and we’ll be glad to check for you.
